Summit for Democracy Preview: The Global Fight for Internet Freedom

The global, open internet is core to a free and democratic society. But right now, its future is at stake. Around the world, we’ve witnessed efforts to shut down internet services and restrict people’s ability to express themselves freely and safely online – underscoring a global, overall decline in internet freedom. The consequences of these attempts are far-reaching, touching human rights, economic growth and development, and beyond.
At the same time, leaders in democratic nations are struggling with challenges arising from online speech; debating how to respond effectively to online mis- and disinformation, hate speech, harassment and more.
As leaders convene for President Biden’s Summit for Democracy, how should they navigate these far-reaching challenges? How can governments articulate a vision for a global, open internet grounded in democratic values and human rights?
On Wednesday, December 8th, at 12:00 pm ET, the Center for Democracy & Technology will host a virtual panel to address these questions.
