Gendered disinformation is a form of disinformation that relies on sex-based narratives and, like most online gender-based violence (GBV), is targeted at or about women and girls (many expressions of gender identity & sexual orientation are also subject to online abuse and harassment.) In the electoral context, there is a direct link between gendered disinformation and the political suppression of women and other marginalized people.

This session will be facilitated by experts — including CDT’s DeVan Hankerson Madrigal — with backgrounds in research, advocacy, and representative politics to discuss gendered disinformation and other forms of online gender based violence, both of which threaten participatory democracies. The session will also address harm from an intersectional perspective, examining how race, gender, and other identities are used in disinformation campaigns around the world, and what we can do to address the problem.
