Graphic for High Level Event Spyware in the EU event

Time: 13:00- 14:30 pm CET

Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Join us on the 15th of May for a crucial online high-level event addressing the aftermath of the Pegasus spyware scandal and its worldwide impact. In 2021, the Pegasus scandal sent shockwaves around the world, shedding light on the dangers of government surveillance enabled by modern technologies. Despite multiple calls for action, meaningful progress at the EU level remains elusive, prompting civil society to take the lead in advocating for human-rights protective approaches.

As EU elections, the largest trans-national elections in the world, approach, our panel of experts composed of key institutional representatives (EU and global) will delve into the urgent need for regulatory action against the misuse of spyware technologies in the upcoming legislative term.

Participants:

  • Sophie in ‘t Veld, Member of the European Parliament, Renew Europe, Rapporteur of the PEGA report
  • David Kaye, UC Irvine School of Law, Independent Board Chair, Global Network Initiative, former UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression
  • Anna Buchta, Head of Unit “Policy & Consultation”, European Data Protection Supervisor
  • Iverna Mcgowan, Tech and Human Rights Advisor, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Moderator:

  • Asha Allen, Acting Director at the Center for Democracy & Technology Europe
