UNESCO IUI Phase 1-CDT Response

UNESCO—the U.N. agency dedicated to building global peace and security—recently released a call for input on a proposed set of indicators that will be used to “assess the Internet in any country, and highlight areas where improvements can be made.” CDT commends UNESCO for undertaking this effort, which will enable coherent and consistent evaluations of the environment for online free expression around the world, and we welcomed the opportunity to comment on the Internet Universality Indicators. In line with CDT’s mission and the work of the Free Expression team, our feedback addressed topics related to due process, transparency, and content filtering/monitoring, among other issues.
