CDT and LGBT Tech – Hidden Harms: Targeting LGBTQ+ Students
Date: October 19, 2022
Time: 2-3 PM ET
Student activity monitoring has been deployed in schools across the country, and while defenders of these technologies argue they keep students safe, research has shown that there are drawbacks to consider. For instance, students who identify as LGBTQ+ have been affected by these systems, effectively making their schools less welcoming and inclusive.
What can be done to mitigate the harms of using these tools, as well as support youth who have been impacted? Elizabeth Laird and Cody Venzke of CDT, along with Christopher Wood from LGBT Tech and Ceema Samimi of the University of Minnesota, will discuss protections that can be put into place to support learners from this community. We hope that you will join us for this critical conversation.
