Privacy

CDT advances strong privacy protections for the data that companies and governments collect, advocating for laws, corporate policies, and rules that keep people’s personal information safe and secure.

At home, at school, at work, and everywhere in between companies collect massive amounts of information about our behavior, opinions and preferences. But individuals rarely know who’s watching them or how that information ultimately gets used — whether it’s facilitating customer service, producing hyper-targeted advertising, or selling personal data to third parties.

CDT pushes for rules that protect people’s privacy and civil rights, driving the global conversations on what policies and principles are needed around this generation — and the next generation  — of data-driven technologies. CDT has been pushing for comprehensive privacy legislation to address these issues since our inception, and is a leading voice prioritizing privacy and antidiscrimination in the age of AI. We work to limit data collection and build safeguards to help alleviate the harms those practices cause and to provide more user rights to ensure people can access, correct, port, or delete the data companies hold about them.
