Election offices and political campaigns have been targeted by cyber attacks; election officials have faced a surge of harassment and intimidation; and coordinated campaigns of disinformation about how elections are administered have precipitated a crisis of trust. Federal support for election security has been gutted just as the rise of AI creates new threats to information integrity and cybersecurity.
CDT works to support secure, accessible, informed, and trustworthy elections. We monitor trends and conduct real-time research to understand how AI is impacting elections – from new campaign uses, to the risks of deepfakes and manipulation, to ensuring that widely-used AI tools return accurate information about when and how people can vote.
We work to help voters access authoritative information about elections and campaigns, fight tech-enabled voter suppression, and support election security and administration through our work with election officials, AI companies and online platforms, legislators, voting rights organizations, and other stakeholders.
