His research focuses on building safe and globally equitable AI systems. He combines human-centered methods, computational evaluations, and field studies to understand and improve how AI systems work across diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts. His research spans three areas:
AI & Culture: He studies how AI systems represent cultures, values, identities, and perspectives, and develop new methods to evaluate and improve cultural alignment.
AI & Safety: He studies how AI and online platforms can create and amplify harms, and develop human-centered and computational approaches for making these systems safer across diverse populations and contexts.
AI for Social Impact: He develops human-centered AI systems with frontline workers and underserved communities, particularly in health and education, with deployed systems now supporting tens of thousands of people.
More broadly, his research spans Human-AI Interaction, AI Safety, Responsible AI, and Computing for Global Development.
His research has been covered by The New Yorker, The Atlantic, MIT Technology Review, Fast Company, and Al Jazeera. My research is generously supported by NSF, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Infosys, and others.
Before Cornell, Aditya completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, where my dissertation received the William Chan Memorial Dissertation Award and the WAGS/ProQuest Innovation in Technology Award.
