Mobilizing Against NSA Mass Surveillance

This Saturday, the Stop Watching Us coalition will hold the largest rally yet opposing NSA mass surveillance. As part of the coalition, CDT will be participating in and leading a series of events in Washington, DC, over the next few days aimed at reforming the NSA’s surveillance programs and helping people secure their digital communications. Below is a look at what’s in store this weekend.

Lobby Day

This Friday, CDT is helping to coordinate a lobby day in which over 100 constituents from across the country will meet with their Congressional Representatives to discuss NSA surveillance. There will be two training sessions held on Friday at 9 and 10am. At the sessions, we’ll provide constituents with an overview of the NSA’s surveillance programs and prep them to meet with Hill staffers. After the training, constituents will meet with key staffers to talk about NSA surveillance and why this issue matters to them. Visit the Stop Watching Us rally website for more information on the lobby day.

Crypto Party Happy Hour

From 4:30-7pm on Friday, CDT Chief Technologist Joe Hall will be among a number of expert technologists leading how-to, hands-on sessions on secure communications tools, including encrypted email. ‘Stop Watching Us’ Rally

This Saturday, starting at 11:30am, thousands are expected to meet in front of Union Station in Washington, DC, and march to the Capitol Reflecting Pool to protest mass surveillance. Speakers at the rally include Congressman Justin Amash, technologist Bruce Schneier and a performance by indie pop group YACHT. Join the largest rally yet against mass surveillance by RSVP’ing here.

Hill Briefings

On Monday, CDT, along with our colleagues at EFF, ACLU, Cato, and the Competitive Enterprise Institute, will hold Congressional briefings in the House and Senate to prepare staffers for votes on upcoming legislation on surveillance reform. If you’re a Hill staffer and would like to attend, email CDT’s Mark Stanley for more information.
