Hidden Harms: How Student Activity Monitoring Increases Risk of Discipline and Police Contact

In recent years, a number of stories have come out related to how student activity monitoring has been used for disciplinary purposes in schools across the United States. Much of this reporting has also shed light on how these tools bring students into unwanted contact with law enforcement. While these programs pose a risk to learners of all backgrounds, research has indicated that students from historically marginalized communities are more likely to be harmed by software for surveillance.
How can policymakers, as well as administrators, reverse this trend and support all learners? Elizabeth Laird and Cody Venzke of CDT, as well as Clarence Okoh of the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) and Lorraine Wright of I Vote for Me, will explore how safeguards can be put into place to make school safer for students of all backgrounds.
