CDT and Public Interest Organizations Call on Congress to Consider Current Harms of AI
Today, CDT joined a broad coalition of 85+ civil society groups in urging Congress to prioritize civil rights, consumer protection, and other public interest considerations in its work on artificial intelligence.
Congress is leading an important and growing effort on developing AI policy, with Senator Schumer’s AI Forums and multiple hearings in both chambers. Today’s letter makes clear the public interests at stake and the need for robust civil society participation.
In particular, AI can obstruct access to economic and social opportunities, and impinge on civil rights & civil liberties. AI is also worsening fraud and extortion schemes, and can increase election-related misinformation.
For the U.S. to be a true global leader in AI, it must lead in responsible, rights-respecting innovation that directly addresses these myriad harms. That leadership includes meaningful consultation with the public interest voices who represent the communities most impacted by AI.
