Letter to ED and the White House from Tech Policy, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties Advocates Calling for Civil Rights Guidance and Enforcement Regarding EdTech and AI

In response to new CDT research demonstrating the harms of educational data and technology – such as content filtering and blocking, algorithmic surveillance, predictive analytics, and AI – several technology policy groups, civil rights, and civil liberties organizations sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Education, the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and copied numerous White House officials leading the Biden Administration’s work on AI and civil rights.

We called for them to:

  • Issue guidance on the use of such technologies in schools;
  • Clarify that existing student civil rights laws apply to such uses, and;
  • State their intent to prioritize this guidance and enforcement against violations that have a discriminatory impact on protected classes of students.
