CDT Joins Coalition Letter Calling for Necessary Amendments to the Open App Markets Act

The Center for Democracy & Technology joined a coalition letter, together with TechFreedom, Free Press Action, LGBT Tech, and others, reiterating our call for amendments to the Open App Markets Act.

As we highlighted in February, in a previous coalition letter, OAMA’s provision prohibiting “self-preferencing in search” risks enabling spurious lawsuits by app developers who are unhappy with the content moderation actions an app store may have taken against their app. Such lawsuits could discourage app stores from removing, demoting, or labeling apps that disseminate abusive content and disinformation.

We appreciate that bill sponsors adopted part of our recommendations from the February 2022 letter. Today’s letter reiterates that further amendments are necessary to alleviate the risks to content moderation that OAMA poses in its current form, and urges the Senate not to move OAMA forward without these additional amendments.
