CDT and EPIC Submit Comments Regarding the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Attempt to Expand Data Collection and AI Use in Key Departmental System
The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) and the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) submitted comments objecting to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) recent System of Records Notice (SORN) that would collect new categories of personal data and expand the usage of AI within the HUD’s customer relationship management system. Despite the significant changes proposed, the SORN lacks key details about system accuracy, fitness and safety, security protocols to protect personal information, and accountability mechanisms for individuals whose personal information is processed by the AI system. These deficiencies likely violate the Privacy Act, and our comments urge HUD to roll back the changes proposed in the SORN and proceed with the proposed changes only after addressing the issues raised.
