At its May 2023 Hiroshima Summit, the Group of Seven (G7) launched the Hiroshima AI Process (HAIP) in response to the rapid proliferation of generative AI models. The HAIP aims to promote transparency around the opportunities and risks presented by advanced AI systems and serve as a forum for collaboration on governance challenges. In February 2025, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) established a reporting framework that provides a mechanism for organizations developing advanced AI systems to voluntarily report on their risk mitigation practices, intending to facilitate cross-organizational comparability and to identify and disseminate good practices. The first round of reports were submitted and published by the OECD in April of last year.
On January 22, the Brookings Institution and the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) will host a public discussion on global AI governance, transparency mechanisms and monitoring. The discussion, organized in the lead-up to the India AI Impact Summit, will open with introductory remarks by Indian Ambassador H.E. Vinay Mohan Kwatra, setting out India’s priorities for responsible and trustworthy AI.
Brookings and CDT experts will then present findings from a new report on the HAIP Reporting Framework, assessing how this first-of-its-kind, voluntary reporting mechanism is shaping transparency and risk mitigation for advanced AI systems, and areas for improvement. Following the report presentation, a multi-stakeholder panel of government officials, multilateral representatives, and civil society will discuss lessons from the first HAIP reporting cycle, practical approaches to AI transparency and monitoring, and how voluntary reporting can complement global AI governance approaches and inform the agenda of the India AI Impact Summit. A subsequent panel will feature industry representatives and explore the value of voluntary transparency reporting and how industry can support these efforts. Finally, a fireside chat will delve into NIST’s efforts to begin building toward standards for model documentation and transparency through its “Zero Drafts” pilot project.
