Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued decisions in key online free expression cases Gonzalez v. Google and Twitter v. Taamneh. In response, the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) issued the following statement from Vice President of Policy Samir Jain:
“Today’s ruling means the internet will continue to be a place where people can express themselves without the fear of being censored by platforms concerned about liability.
Significantly changing the interpretation of Section 230 — which has prevailed for two and a half decades — would have resulted in countless lawsuits against communications providers of all kinds, with an enormous chilling effect on the speech of everyday users.
Going forward, we urge the Court to keep risks to users’ free speech front of mind as it considers other laws seeking to regulate platforms where people express themselves.”
