CDT Joins Industry, Nonprofits, Schools, Governments, & Libraries in Demanding Congress Include Broadband Access in COVID-19 Stimulus Funding

As government leaders, policymakers, and technology companies continue to navigate the global coronavirus pandemic, CDT is actively monitoring the latest responses and working to ensure they are grounded in civil rights and liberties. The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a bright light on the digital divide in the United States. Tens of millions of Americans don’t have broadband internet at home, and are unable to access distance learning, telemedicine, or telework. Low-income families, rural residents, and persons of color are particularly affected, leaving our most vulnerable communities struggling to stay connected. As millions of people lose their jobs, an increasing number will be unable to afford their broadband access, and the digital divide will continue to widen.

This morning, CDT joined with more than two hundred organizations calling on Congress to include broadband access as part of its stimulus plans to respond to the coronavirus.  We must take the necessary steps to close the digital divide in our country.
