Joanna Tricoli is a Policy and Research Officer at the Centre for Democracy & Technology Europe. She works in the Security, surveillance and human rights programme, where she focuses on the intersection of human rights, security, and surveillance. This includes working on issues such as spyware, law enforcement’s use of surveillance, and issues relating to the right to communicate securely, with a particular focus on journalists and human rights defenders.

Prior to joining CDT’s Brussels office, Joanna was Protection Associate in UNHCR Country Office in Warsaw where she engaged in legal and policy work related to EU affairs, human rights advocacy and data protection. She also gained experience as a trainee in the Directorate-General for Justice and Home Affairs at the Council of the European Union, where she supported policy negotiations on cybersecurity and explored emerging topics such as artificial intelligence and the metaverse.

Joanna holds a law degree from the University of Trento and a LLM in International Law & Security from the University of Glasgow.
