WAMU: New Concerns Over Phones, Intelligence Gathering And National Security
CDT’s Senior Counsel and Director of the Freedom, Security and Technology Project Greg Nojeim went on-air with the Diane Rehm Show to discuss Apple and Google’s announcements regarding encryption on smartphones.
Both companies announced their intentions to incorporate encryption on their latest mobile operating systems, making “photos, videos and personal contacts accessible only by the owner of the phone.” Though a huge step for consumer privacy, law enforcement officials are posing the argument that the new changes will alter the landscape of our national security and public safety, making justice more difficult to pursue.
Greg chats with Diane as well as David Sanger, author and national security correspondent for The New York Times; James Bamford, author of “The Shadow Factory: The NSA from 9/11 to the Eavesdropping on America;” and Ronald Hosko, president of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund and former Assistant Director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division.
