Net Neutrality: What It Is and Why It Matters

Your favorite site may have a spinning “loading” icon today, saying “Sorry, we’re stuck in the slow lane.” Or may show a pop-up asking for you to “upgrade your plan to proceed”. What’s going on? Welcome to the Day of Action for net neutrality, an online protest against legal changes that could alter the internet forever.

The Day of Action is protesting the planned removal of a pair of legal protections for net neutrality, by showing what the web could look like if it wasn’t as open as it is now. Here’s what campaigners from across the net — from Google to Netflix — are so worried about, and what you can do to help.

“Internet access could be reduced to a cable package where users are forced to pay a toll to the ISP for access to specific websites or services,” said Ferras Vinh, policy counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT).
