Make Digital Privacy a Priority in 2017: Pass the Email Privacy Act

Today, the Email Privacy Act, which would reform the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), was reintroduced. The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has long advocated for ECPA reform to ensure that everyone’s digital communications receive strong privacy protections. CDT supports passage of the Email Privacy Act and hopes this is the Congress that finally gets ECPA reform done.

“The Email Privacy Act is a commonsense, bipartisan measure that protects the privacy of everyone’s communications. The importance of private communications is clearly one thing everyone in Congress can agree on,” said Center for Democracy & Technology Vice President for Policy Chris Calabrese. “Representatives Yoder and Polis have worked tirelessly to craft a measure which passed the House unanimously last Congress. This year we urge rapid passage by Congress and the President.”

CDT will continue to work with members of the Digital Due Process Coalition to advance ECPA reform. More information on our reform efforts is available here.
