Emma Llansó Named Director of CDT’s Free Expression Project

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has promoted Emma Llansó to Director of its Free Expression Project. Llansó, who previously served as Policy Counsel at CDT, has been active on CDT’s free expression and Global Internet Policy & Human Rights projects, where she has focused on the issues of First Amendment law, international free expression, internet governance, and children’s privacy and safety online.

“Emma is a true rising talent in the technology policy field. Her work is respected and recognized by her colleagues and peers, and her depth of analysis and fresh perspective on challenging issues set her apart. We look forward to Emma leading CDT’s Free Expression Project into new areas, and continuing the fight to preserve a free and open Internet that benefits everyone,” said Leslie Harris, CDT’s President and CEO.

“I’m thrilled to be taking on this new role at CDT,” said Llansó. “In the U.S. and around the world, the challenges to maintaining the Internet as a platform for users’ free expression are only growing more complex. As increasing numbers of users rely on the Internet as their primary tool for communication and access to information, we must ensure that the essential policy foundation for online free expression – including protections for intermediaries, network neutrality, and a focus on user empowerment tools – remains strong. I’m glad to have the opportunity to work with CDT’s team of experts and advocates on these critical issues.”

Llansó first joined CDT in 2009 as an Equal Justice Works Fellow sponsored by the Bruce J. Ennis Foundation. Her fellowship project focused on analyzing U.S. legislative, regulatory, and policy proposals aimed at addressing online child safety and privacy concerns for their potential impact on free expression online. She earned her J.D. from Yale Law School and her B.A. in anthropology from the University of Delaware. She has been admitted to the New York State Bar.
