Chris Calabrese Promoted to Vice President, Policy

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) is excited to announce the promotion of Chris Calabrese to Vice President, Policy. Calabrese most recently served as Senior Director of Policy at CDT. In his new role, Chris oversees CDT’s policy agenda, working across policy teams to encourage collaboration, develop policy strategy, and help lead CDT’s advocacy and coalition work.

Since joining CDT, he has spearheaded reform efforts around the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, advanced involvement in emerging issues such as the overlap between civil rights and privacy, the legal issues stemming from the flow of data across national borders, unmanned drone surveillance, and the use of police body cameras, and been a visible spokesperson around NSA reform. He has also worked to increase privacy oversight by the Federal Communications Commission and was recently named to the agency’s Consumer Advisory Committee.

Prior to CDT, Chris was the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), where he led the Washington Legal Office’s efforts in fighting for privacy and the responsible use of technology, particularly developing strategy for battling flawed data collection practices of the government and private sectors. Previously, Calabrese was project counsel at the ACLU Technology & Liberty Project and legal counsel to the Massachusetts Senate Majority Leader, Linda J. Melconian.

Calabrese completed his J.D. at the Georgetown University Law Center, and graduated from Harvard University.
