CDT Welcomes Three New Board Members

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has added three new members to its Board of Directors: former FTC Commissioner and privacy attorney Julie Brill, computer scientist and cybersecurity expert Carl Landwehr, and communications strategist and telecommunications lawyer Mark Seifert. All three were unanimously approved by CDT’s current Board members.

“No nonprofit has done more to influence human rights-focused technology policy than CDT. As we look toward the future, new perspectives, ideas, and energy are essential to our ongoing success. All three new members bring unique experiences and expertise that will help CDT continue to lead for years to come. I’m thrilled to welcome Julie, Carl, and Mark to CDT’s Board of Directors,” said Deirdre Mulligan, Chair of CDT’s Board of Directors.

Julie Brill, a Partner at Hogan Lovells, previously served as a Commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission. While at the FTC, she earned a reputation as one of the leading voices on internet privacy and data security. Julie is currently co-leading Hogan Lovells’ Global Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice, where she is focusing on helping companies navigate the complex rules around the use of data.

Carl Landwehr is one of the nation’s foremost experts in cybersecurity and trustworthy computing. A computer scientist, his work has addressed the identification of software vulnerabilities toward high-assurance software development, architectures for intrusion-tolerant and multi-level security systems, token-based authentication, and system evaluation and certification methods. Carl has led cybersecurity research programs at the National Science Foundation, IARPA, the Naval Research Laboratory, and Mitretek Systems. He is currently a Lead Research Scientist at the Cyber Security Policy and Research Institute at The George Washington University.

Mark Seifert is a Partner at the Brunswick Group, where he co-leads the firm’s privacy and data security practice. Mark previously served at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he oversaw the $5 billion broadband infrastructure program. He has served in all three branches of the federal government. With the Brunswick Group, he advises a range of clients on government affairs, crisis communications, media relations, and issues management.
