CDT Statement on YouTube’s Court Win in Billion Dollar Viacom Lawsuit

Washington, DC — The Center for Democracy & Technology released the following statement today on YouTube's court win in its billion dollar copyright battle with Viacom:

"Today's decision isn't just about YouTube," said CDT Senior Policy Counsel David Sohn.  "Without this decision, user generated content would dry up and the Internet would cease to be a participatory medium."

"The 'safe harbor' provision of the DMCA is a real success story and one of the reasons for the rapid growth of innovative online services," said CDT President Leslie Harris. "A Viacom win would have gutted a critical part of the DMCA's copyright bargain."
