CDT Joins Campaign to End Bulk Collection Under the PATRIOT Act

This week the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) joined with 37 other advocacy groups from across the political spectrum on the launch of the Fight 215 campaign to end bulk collection under the PATRIOT Act.  The campaign encourages individuals to contact their Congressional representatives and speak out on social media for substantial government surveillance reform. The campaign focuses on Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, which the government uses to conduct its telephony metadata program. Section 215 is set to expire on June 1, which requires Congress to take action or allow it to sunset.

“The public wants to see the NSA’s over broad surveillance activities reined in, and now is the time for Congress to act,” said CDT Advocacy Director and Senior Counsel Harley Geiger.  “Section 215 has been misappropriated for mass collection of Americans’ sensitive metadata for far too long, and with less than 2 months until the law sunsets, Congress should move quickly to pass legislation that restores privacy rights and enacts significant reform.”
