CDT Board Elects Three New Members
WASHINGTON – The Center for Democracy & Technology today is pleased to announce the election of three new board members: Jill Lesser, Deirdre K. Mulligan and Ira Rubinstein.
The new board members bring a wealth of experience and insight to CDT during a time when the organization is experiencing its greatest expansion and sees its influence expanding among policy makers, industry groups and manufacturers. These additions will strengthen the organization and help advance CDT's mission of keeping the Internet open, innovative and free by providing new perspectives and knowledge.
Each of the three new members was elected for a three-year term beginning on January 1, 2010.
"The talent and diverse expertise represented on our board has always been a key asset for our organization as evidenced by our ability to attract independent thought leaders," said CDT President Leslie Harris. "Our new board members share a passion and dedication for CDT's vision of keeping the Internet open, innovative and free."
Each of the three new board members has a stellar track record of advocacy on Internet issues and are recognized throughout the public and private sectors as influential voices. "Our new members have done much of the pioneering work needed to build an open Internet and will help us advance our Internet freedom mission," said CDT Board Chairman Jerry Berman.
CDT's new board members are:
Jill Lesser, a Senior Consultant to the Glover Park Group, specializing in government relations, public affairs and strategic policy. While at the Glover Park Group, Ms. Lesser has focused primarily on copyright, consumer protection, and telecommunications policy issues for clients in the media industry, with a particular focus on work for companies in the Internet industry. Prior to joining the Glover Park Group, Ms. Lesser was a Senior Vice President and Senior Policy Advisor for America Online, Inc. and for Time Warner, Inc. (after AOL's merger with Time Warner). She also served as staff counsel at People for the American Way.
Deirdre K. Mulligan, a professor of law at the UC Berkeley School of Information and a Faculty Director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology. She was the founding director of the Samuelson Clinic, which she led from 2001-2008. She was previously staff counsel for CDT. Professor Mulligan’s current research agenda focuses on information privacy and security.
Ira Rubinstein, a Senior Fellow at the Information Law Institute at NYU Law School. His research interests include Internet profiling, electronic surveillance law, online identity, Internet security and software liability. Prior to joining the ILI, he spent 17 years in Microsoft's Legal and Corporate Affairs department, most recently as Associate General Counsel in charge of the Regulatory Affairs and Public Policy group.
