Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Scaled-Back Computer Crime Bill
The Senate Judiciary Committee on October 5 approved a substantially scaled back version of S. 2448, computer crime legislation. The substitute drafted by Sens. Hatch, Leahy, and Schumer did not contain the nationwide surveillance authority for transactional data and other expansions of surveillance authority sought by the Justice Department, nor did it contain any of the privacy-enhancing provisions recently approved by the House Judiciary Committee. Senators made it clear that those issues would be addressed next year.
