Carnivore Controversy Continues
A team from the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI) released a draft of its report on the FBI's Carnivore monitoring system. The report pointed out several weaknesses in the system, but also concluded that the system, when used correctly, appropriately limits the amount of information collected and stored. However, leading computer scientists and privacy experts criticized the IITRI report and Carnivore. The final report is expected December 20. Meanwhile, more FBI documents released under FOIA show confusion at the FBI over legal standards for surveillance of Internet communications.
