Advocacy & Communications Assistant, Europe

The Centre for Democracy & Technology, Europe Office (CDT Europe) is seeking an Advocacy & Communications Assistant to help support the Europe Office’s work on protecting human rights and democracy in the digital age. This position offers an exciting opportunity to get involved promoting human rights and democratic principles through advocacy and communications at the EU level around key files relating to the functioning of online platforms, artificial intelligence, electronic communications, and the internet as a whole. The position will be based in CDT’s Europe Office in Brussels, Belgium.

At CDT Europe, we work to increase equality, amplify voices, and promote human rights in European level law and policy debates. We champion policies, laws, and technical designs that protect against invasive, discriminatory, and exploitative uses of new technologies. We use our in-depth tech policy knowledge to build capacity and, in turn, learn from other civil society partners on issues such as discriminatory impact of algorithms and participation in online debates. CDT Europe is closely following European-level legislative files such as the Digital Services Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act. In our interventions, CDT Europe insists that online platforms be transparent, accountable, and respect human rights. We advocate that regulation should set limits on the collection and use of personal information and give people greater control. Our work also focuses on curtailing government censorship and enabling all people to access and share information of their choosing, without harassment or undue interference. We work to ensure that people are free from unwarranted government surveillance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cooperating with the larger CDT Communications Team in creating and shaping CDT Europe’s communication strategy, managing a dedicated Twitter and LinkedIn account;
  • Supporting the creation and planning of day-to-day social media content;
  • Event organisation, including drafting concept notes, promotion on social media, and creating meeting minutes;
  • Managing stakeholder contact lists and keeping them up to date;
  • Monitoring the development of EU legislative files and communicating key developments to CDT colleagues;
  • Drafting and ensuring the dissemination of the monthly CDT Europe newsletter;
  • Supporting the implementation of CDT’s strategic advocacy plans;
  • Background research to support the development of CDT’s policy positions;
  • Supporting the drafting of CDT’s policy papers, blog posts, joint letters;
  • Coordinating the input to EU consultative processes; and
  • Taking notes of meetings and events on an ad-hoc basis.

Qualifications – An ideal candidate would have:

  • At least 2-3 years of work experience (internships included), preferably in the area of EU law and policy making relating to technology and democracy and human rights;
  • A degree in a relevant field (e.g., law, computer science, information technology, public policy);
  • Knowledge of EU decision making processes;
  • Fluent in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, other languages are an advantage but not required;
  • Prior experience in social media management and internal communications; and
  • An energetic, entrepreneurial, and collaborative working style.

Remuneration and Benefits:

  • Full-time, fixed-term one-year Belgian employment contract;
  • Salary scale: €35,000 to €40,000 gross per annum depending on experience;
  • Must have a right to work in Belgium;
  • Location: Brussels ,Belgium (remote possible as long as Covid-19 restrictions apply);
  • Benefits include: hospitalisation insurance, pension contribution, and meal vouchers.
