Children’s Privacy

Age-based regulations aimed at protecting children’s privacy online, while well-intended, are often ineffective and can infringe on the free speech rights of both minors and adults.  Laws that require website operators to treat users’ data differently based on their age encourage collection of more information from everyone. These laws can also discourage the development of content and services designed especially for children.  CDT supports an approach to children’s privacy that combines kids-oriented education and tools with comprehensive privacy protections for all users, children and adults alike.
