Responsible AI Innovation Must Move Forward, As President Trump Rescinds AI EO

Last week, President Trump rescinded the Biden Administration’s Executive Order for Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI EO), which kicked off a whole-of-government effort that aimed to help advance responsible AI innovation.

“The Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence took a whole-of-government approach to advancing responsible AI innovation,” said Alexandra Reeve Givens, CDT’s President and CEO. “Since its passage, agencies have invested significant time into developing guidance for various sectors to support AI adoption while respecting people’s rights and safety. That work tracked bipartisan interest in Congress — and, notably, was largely in line with the priorities President Trump laid out for AI during his first term in office.

“The AI EO played a valuable role in shaping the public and private sectors’ approach to AI at a breakthrough moment for the technology. But with or without the Order in effect, it’s in everyone’s interest to continue to adopt AI tools in smart, responsible ways and ensure America remains a leader in AI governance.”
