CDT Joins Coalition Letter Urging FTC to Better Protect Consumers Against Data-driven Civil Rights Harms

The Center for Democracy & Technology joined a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) led by the Lawyers’ Committee and Public Knowledge. The FTC Act authorizes the agency to enforce against unfair and deceptive acts and practices.

The coalition calls for the FTC to regulate and more aggressively enforce against the numerous data practices that fall within the scope of this authority. These data practices include algorithm-driven decision-making that creates and reinforces inequities in economic opportunities. They also include opaque data practices that violate due process and make consumer data vulnerable without accountability.

The FTC must act now to protect consumers against data-driven civil rights harms and exploitation.
