CDT Joins Coalition in Filing Amicus Briefs Supporting FCC Fines of Telecom Companies Over Privacy Violations
CDT joined a coalition of civil society partners in filing two amicus briefs in the appeals of the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to fine Verizon and T-Mobile over data practices that violated telecommunications privacy law. In particular, the Commission found that these companies collected geolocation data of their customers and then sold that data to third parties without customer consent (as required by law), with some data eventually ending up in the hands of bounty hunters.
In the briefs, we explain to the courts that the FCC has ample authority to protect against these harmful data practices, that geolocation is particularly accurate and sensitive information about people and that misuse of that data can cause serious harm, and that the FCC is the proper agency to enforce privacy protections against telecommunications companies.
