CDT Goes to RightsCon 2025

RightsCon 2025 kicks off in Taipei, Taiwan (and online) on February 24th this year, and CDT is showing up in full force. Organized by Access Now, RightsCon is the can’t-miss event for the international digital rights community, attracting top-level advocates, human rights experts, government officials, and leaders from the tech industry. 

CDT staff and coalition partners will be participating on multiple panels from February 24-27, focusing on topics such as artificial intelligence, censorship, content moderation, and language access.

Tuesday, February 25

  • Regulating spyware: implementing the PEGA committee report and beyond the EU. (9-10a, Taiwan Standard Time [TST] / 8-9pm ET) Hybrid

Wednesday, February 26

  • Enhancing Multilingual AI: Developing Best Practices for Building Multilingual Language Models (4:30-5:30pm Taiwan Standard Time [TST] / 3:30-4:30am ET) In-Person
    • Aliya Bhatia will present research into the capabilities and limits of building multilingual language tools and open up a discussion to learn more about examples of where these systems are being deployed and potential opportunities for improving these systems. 

Thursday, February 27

  • GenAI, LLMs, COMO & T&S: where do human rights and communities fit in today’s hottest acronyms? (11:30am-12:30pm Taiwan Standard Time [TST] / 10:30pm-11:30pm ET) In-person
    • Aliya Bhatia will join a panel hosted by the European Centre for Not-for-Profit law on the increased use of large language models to conduct content moderation.

In addition to the CDTers attending/leading the above events, Nick Sullivan, Visiting Fellow at CDT, will also be attending RightsCon — for the Internet Shutdowns and Disruptions track, and the SplinterCon side event — connecting with experts and sharing analysis on censorship resistance efforts.

Kate Ruane, Director of CDT’s Free Expression will be attending events hosted by the Freedom Online Coalition as a member of the Network.
And, Greg Nojeim will be attending events as part of his role in the Global Encryption Coalition.
