CDT and Over 20 Civil Society Groups Call for Estimate of Americans Impacted by FISA Section 702 Surveillance

Warrantless surveillance authorized by Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) pulls in the private communications of a huge number of Americans, however the total number affected has gone unrecorded for far too long. For over a decade members of Congress and civil society organizations have called on the Intelligence Community to publish an estimate of the number of Americans impacted by this warrantless surveillance system. With FISA Section 702 set to expire in 2026, gathering more information on its impact is critical. That is why CDT and over 20 other civil society groups sent a letter to the Director of National Intelligence calling on her to develop and share this information.
