Weekly Privacy Tip: Use Social Media to Support Privacy

No, this tip is not an oxymoron. Social media sites are an excellent way to organize and advocate for online privacy. Each week, @CenDemTech (CDT’s Twitter account) and @PrivacyCamp host #PrivChat, an hour-long discussion on Twitter that draws privacy professionals and advocates from all over the world. Recently, some of the participants on #PrivChat organized to name Twitter Data Privacy Day 2011 Company of the Year for successfully fighting an order that it not tell users it was turning their information over to the U.S. government. Whether or not you agree with the award, it is an example of people organizing and using the power of social media to speak up for privacy.
