Weekly Privacy Tip: Do You Tor?

If you have some patience and tech savvy, this is the granddaddy of all privacy tips. Tor (The Onion Router) is an anonymity network that hides online activity behind layers (like an onion) of proxies and encryption. Tor is not a fast network, but is easy to set up if you download a bundled package from the Tor site. Tor was popularly used in the aftermath of the contentious 2009 elections in Iran. When the alternative to privacy was imprisonment, the Iranian people chose Tor. The Broadcasting Board of Governors, which is made up of eight presidentially-appointed board members and the secretary of state, supports the use of Tor in oppressive regimes.
