Weekly Privacy Tip: Contact Congress To Demand Privacy Legislation

Recently, there’s been a spate of privacy bills that have been introduced or are being prepared for introduction in Congress. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) has reintroduced his BEST PRACTICES Act from last year, with minor changes; Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) has introduced “Do Not Track” legislation; and Rep. Cliff Streans (R-Fla.) and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) are preparing separate comprehensive privacy legislation. On top of this, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) was named chairman of a new Judiciary subcommittee for Privacy, Technology and the Law.

It’s clear privacy is an area of focus for the 112th Congress. After years of dithering, the public may finally get the privacy legislation we deserve. That’s why it’s important to speak up now: Please join CDT and our supporters in calling for baseline privacy legislation by signing this letter to Congress.
