Groups Call On Congress To Outlaw Bulk Telephone Call Information

CDT and approximately 60 other organizations, companies and individuals called on the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to make it clear that it does not permit the bulk collection of Americans’ communications metadata. They also noted that Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has introduced a bill, the FISA Accountability Act (S. 1215), that is an important step in this direction.

The groups also asked the Committee to amend FISA Section 702 to add safeguards to the legislation that permits collection of communications content under the PRISM program, and to press for public disclosure of the opinions of the FISA Court.

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on FISA surveillance this morning.
