The promise of enabling consumers to gain access to data—such as electronic health care records—can be a truly transformative development. This significant step in the ongoing effort to spur more innovation in the nation’s healthcare system offers an opportunity to, in parallel, design safeguards to ensure trusted third parties act in the patient’s best interest. At this short roundtable discussion, we will begin the conversation on how to approach this important issue that will both undergird consumer confidence in such providers and protect those consumers who use such services.

About the Silicon Flatirons Roundtable Series:
The Silicon Flatirons Roundtable Series brings together an exclusive group of academics, public interest advocates, governmental officials, and industry executives for a private in depth discussion on important topics in the technology policy world today. The roundtables use the “Chatham House Rule”: participants will be free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed. Moreover, we will expect to develop a final report with a statement of principles, but that report will only use quotes or information from participants with their consent to do so.
