Time: 1:00 pm- 2:00 PM ET

Date: Monday, April 29, 2024

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) invites you to a fireside chat and panel discussion on the new HHS rule to support reproductive health care privacy under HIPAA. The event will feature a fireside chat with the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Civil Rights Director Melanie Fontes Rainer and CDT President & CEO Alexandra Reeve Givens, followed by an expert panel discussion.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and subsequent state laws that criminalize abortion, patients are at heightened risk that their health care providers will turn over sensitive reproductive health information to law enforcement for abortion-related investigations. In response to this risk, on Monday, April 22, 2024, the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Civil Rights issued a new rule to support reproductive health privacy under HIPAA. The rule protects patient privacy by prohibiting, in certain situations, the disclosure of medical records and other HIPAA-protected health information related to lawful reproductive health care. Please join us to learn more about the new rule and its critical privacy protections.

Panelists:

  • Andrew Crawford, Senior Counsel, Privacy & Data, CDT
  • Erin Mackay, Managing Director for Health Justice, National Partnership for Women and Families
  • Alice Leiter, Counsel, Manatt Health
  • Lisa M. Myers, Senior Washington Counsel, Division of Legislative Counsel, American Medical Association

The event will be livestreamed on CDT’s YouTube channel.
