Tech Talk: Targeting Activists at the Border and Why We Need Data Security Law

There have been a number of serious reports of enhanced screenings by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol at ports of entry. This is apparently based on the speech of individuals and their association with asylum seekers. One group that has experienced this firsthand is Pueblo Sin Fronteras. We hear from Alex Mensing about what his group is seeing and why we should all be concerned.
After that we talk about data security. As Congress considers a variety of proposals for a federal privacy law in the U.S., one aspect that seems to be getting less attention is the data security. Is that intentional or is it something policymakers should be focusing more on? CDT alum Harley Geiger, who is now with the cyber security-focused company Rapid7 and our own Michelle Richardson share their thoughts. Spoiler – they both think we need strong data security laws and believe it should be a key part of any privacy law.
