Matching Without Sharing: Benefits and Challenges of a PSI Technique

We are seeing an emerging need in both government surveillance and consumer privacy contexts we haven’t seen before: we need to be able to match elements in lists of things (e.g., passenger lists, lists of phone numbers and email addresses) without sharing the underlying raw data, which may be very sensitive. This post covers promising techniques from computer science which can accomplish exactly this – allow us to match groups of things without actually having access to the things themselves.
