Free Flow of Information Should Be At Core of Internet Governance - At the close of the Internet Governance Forum in Rio de Janeiro this week, CDT joined other free expression advocates in warning that issues like "security" should not be used as justification for limits on online speech. While the Forum ended without specific action, states that systematically curb freedom of expression on the Internet were among the most vocal in criticizing current Internet governance. The joint statement also called on Internet companies operating in repressive countries to protect freedom of expression. November 16, 2007

CDT Warns of Risk in Debate on "Critical Internet Resources" - Confusion over the concepts of "Internet governance" and "critical Internet resources" threatens to divert attention from key barriers to Internet development and could fuel calls for government intervention that would undermine the Internet's openness, CDT said in paper released today at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Rio de Janeiro. While the term CIR has become a code name in some circles for the Domain Name System, the CDT paper identifies a broader range of concerns and warns against wholesale change in the structure of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Companies, Groups Address Global Civil Liberties Challenges - CDT has joined with a broad group of companies, investors, academics, and human rights groups to address the free expression and privacy challenges facing companies that do business internationally. That process -- which aims to produce a set of principles guiding company behavior when faced with laws, regulations and policies that interfere with the achievement of human rights -- marks a new phase in efforts that the groups began in 2006. The joint process represents the merging of several concurrent efforts by companies, academics and public interest advocates to address the issues. One of those efforts was a series of consultations coordinated by CDT last year. January 18, 2007
