AltaVista

My staff and I have received a number of messages related to AltaVista's relationship with DoubleClick, who serves as our advertising sales agent. I'd like to communicate AltaVista's position on privacy with respect to sharing personally identifiable information with any third party, including DoubleClick.

Hopefully, this will assure you that the personal information that you provide during AltaVista's Member registration process is safe and is not released without your knowledge:

AltaVista respects your privacy and strictly adheres to our posted privacy policy HTTP://DOC.ALTAVISTA.COM/LEGAL/PRIVACY.SHTML and the principles of permission-based marketing for all personally identifiable information.

AltaVista will not release to any third party personally identifiable information that you provide as part of the Member registration process unless we have first given you notice that we might share your data and you have given us permission by affirmatively "opting-in". However, for some registration-based services (such as e-mail) that you request, we do provide certain information to our service partners solely to provide service.

AltaVista does not release to any third party other data that can be linked to personally identifiable information unless we have first given you notice that we might share your data and you have given us permission by affirmatively "opting-in".

AltaVista does not collect highly sensitive information, such as health information, detailed financial information, information of a sexual nature and information on children under 18.

AltaVista will always provide you with the choice to "opt-out" of any marketing activities that you have previously "opted in".

If you are a registered Member, you may at any time review and change the marketing activities for which you have "opted-in". To do this, go to the registration preferences HTTP://REG.ZIP2.COM/CGI-BIN/USERUPDATE.EXE page to review the three marketing options at the bottom of the page; a "checked" box indicates a marketing activity for which you have "opted-in".

AltaVista values your trust and we make a commitment to respect your privacy. AltaVista encourages you to use the Internet and we want to unlock its potential by offering premier services in your search for knowledge. We appreciate your concern and will continue to ensure that our policies and procedures are clear and that you always have a choice to make informed decisions about participating in marketing activities.

Please feel free to contact us at mailto:privacy-support@av.com if you have any further concerns.

Sincerely,

Mark Delfino Vice President AltaVista Member Relationships
